Curriculum

Gardening at Langdon College is used as a vessel to teach the students practical Numeracy Literacy and Communication skills. The students learn about recycling as well as how to tend a garden whilst growing a wide range of fruit vegetables and flowers.

Music is a great way to teach the students self-confidence and give them the skills to formulate opinions whilst making decisions. The students get to play a range of instruments as part of a group and do solo performances, which are often integrated as a part of the end of year Annual Day.

Health and Safety is taught to all students who attend Langdon College. The course is taught in the first and third academic year as a set session whilst the learning is being embedded across the curriculum in all sessions each year.

The first year focuses on assessing risks in the college, home and community giving the students the opportunity to create their own health and safety film whilst the third year focuses on the risks in the workplace.

Independent Living Skills are taught to all students to allow them to become as independent as possible when in the home or accessing the community. The students learn the skills such as cooking, independent travel and domestic skills, which allow them to enjoy the benefits of what their own accommodation and local community has to offer.

For the Duke of Edinburgh Award the students are able to work towards the Bronze and Silver awards. Through theses two levels they have had the opportunity to take part in a range of activities for example, as part of the Physical Recreation Award a group of students learnt to ski, develop skills for golf at the driving range, go rock climbing and canal crossing. In the Skills Section, students have an opportunity to pick a subject of their own choice, learn about the skill and put it into practice.

For their Service Award students have taken part in sponsored events to raise money for charity, they are also required to complete a stage 1 First Aid course.

Last year three students were able to take a practice test as part of the Expedition Award. Learning how to pitch a tent, cook in the outdoors and develop orienteering skills, the whole weekend was very successful and thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Skills for Life sessions are designed to address literacy and numeracy needs of students on learning programmes at levels fro pre-entry up to and including level 2. Each student completes a rigorous assessment process to determine the key areas for development. These programmes range from discrete to embedded courses. Achievement and progress in Skills for Life is recognised through certification of national qualifications in literacy, numeracy and communication.

Work Experience is an integral part of the learning process at Langdon College. Work placements are carefully selected for the individual, meeting their needs and interests, as well as matching their vocational or practical skills. During the placement students, develop essential work skills such as independent travel, social interaction and communication, literacy and numeracy along with the skills necessary to be successful in a specific occupational area.

Drama at Langdon College is used to learn, promote and develop communication skills, interpersonal skills, confidence and social interaction. Students practice literacy numeracy and communication which is embedded through learn to dance, sing and act while working as part of a team or partnership. At the end of each year, the students have the opportunity to show off their skills in the College's annual production.

Information & Learning Technology

Everyone likes computers and here at Langdon College there is no doubt students enjoy the experience of using and learning about up-to-date equipment and software packages. Students have the opportunity to use video/digital cameras to create individualised CDs, complete projects using scanners/internet to obtain images, take responsibility for creating wall displays, listen to and interact with DVDs and CDs and have the opportunity to undertake accredited qualifications catering to individual need.

English Speaking Board is an established and recognised qualification accredited at different examination levels allowing for the growth and success of each individual. Students learn to improve personal presentation along with facial expression and body language to develop verbal communication skills. Students grow in confidence, self advocacy and self awareness; improve skills for socialising with friends and the general public whilst researching information for an individual projects. Students are required to create resources to add quality to a final presentation delivered to an examiner and class audience.

Community Access

Out and about in the community - learning how to travel and access the local amenities is one way in which students at Langdon College are encouraged to become as independent as possible. Learn about bus routes, how to find out information, what you need when travelling, health and safety issues and how to spend social time i.e. theatres/gym/cinemas etc. Students' research and experience selected routes and places of interest with friends and staff.

Team Enterprise

Langdon's Team Programme is a real business affair - board meetings, good quality products, financial decisions, meetings with the financial advisor, visits to businesses, master class days and much more. Students Enjoy learning about team work through real life experiences of running a business. They may take part in choosing a company name and logo for use by the administration department or vote team members into business roles including management, finance, marketing and sales and most importantly Operations where the products are made.

Health & Fitness

All students are encouraged to take part in Health & Fitness sessions, which enables the students to enjoy indoor and outdoor activities in team sports, e.g., rounders, cricket, basketball, football etc. Students also take part in warm up exercises, and dance routine to keep fit.

Hebrew is offered as an option for students who are interested in learning it for conversational language - using modern learning styles such as role-play and interactive CD's, as well as the more traditional approaches.

Shabbat Preparation is a hands-on session where students can learn about preparing for Shabbat and the various Jewish Festivals. Challah, grape juice, chanukiot, candles for Havdalah and spice bags have all been made by the students to help them gain an insight and understanding to the principals behind the customs and traditions of Judaism. Several times a year there is a communal Shabbat meal which is prepared, cooked and served by students.
